Downsize
You don’t have to become a minimalist, but don’t drag items you no longer need along on a cross-country move. Take this time to downsize. An easy way to do this is to create three piles: Keep, donate, and toss. Instead of paying to move small kitchen appliances and clothes you haven’t worn in 10 years, lighten the load, save on your move, and make it a little easier to get set up in your new home.
Carefully Choose Your Moving Company
Not all long-distance moving companies are the same. While most are reputable, a few bad apples make it necessary to do some research about a moving company before signing on the dotted line. Learn about industry affiliations and check for Better Business Bureau accreditation. Most importantly, read reviews to see what past customers have said about their experiences with the moving company in question.
Once you’ve selected a moving company, you should insist on a couple of things:
In-Person Estimates: Providing an accurate quote for a long-distance move over the phone is difficult. Work with a moving company that provides on-site estimates. This allows them to better assess your needs and to provide a more precise quote.
Written Estimates: Don’t settle for a verbal estimate. Get it in writing and read the fine print to ensure that the price quoted includes all the services you need and that the estimate outlines any extra charges that could be imposed.
Know Your Rights
No matter what moving company you choose, you still need to know your rights. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration oversees all long-distance moves. The agency’s Rights and Responsibilities booklet explains the responsibilities of the company and the rights of those making a move.
